Ohio Strain Review:

Whip It

Is Whip It ...good?

Review & Photos by: Randy Shaffer

Packaging: First Impressions

Song is the Tier I label for Calyx Peak, based out of Akron, Ohio. Calyx Peak is managed by famous cannabis industry pioneer, Josh Del Rosso. Tier I strains are slightly less potent than Tier II strains, but don’t let that fool you. Tier I strains can be just as effective, if not more effective, than Tier II. It all boils down to what type of cannabis a patient needs.

This strain is contained in a white glass bottle, similar to the bottles used for Josh D cannabis. Patients cannot see the cannabis they are buying with these bottles. That said, the thick, heavy white jars feel strong and durable, and should be either recyclable or reusable in the future.

Labeling is clean and basic, with a teal colors and simplistic fonts. This jar is all about functionality over style. They are easy to open and fit nicely into the hands. The label is an improvement over the Josh D labels. If nothing else, the label fits a little better than the Josh D label, which wrapped around the edges of the jar.

Cannabis Look: Out of the Bottle

Whip It is more yellow in appearance than many of the strains I’ve tried, which makes it almost look like a CBD strain (it isn’t). This is due to the thick trichome structure that paints over the green leaves with dashes of muted white and an almost mustard yellow.

Nugs are mid-sized, about the size of a quarter. They appeared brittle at first touch, but displayed a surprising bit of density as I examined each nug. The cannabis was beautifully trimmed, cured and ready to grind.

How Does It Grind?

This is a tougher strain to grind than expected. That’s likely due to the density of the nugs themselves. It took me more than the usual amount of turns to achieve a good, effective grind. Patients who suffer from pain of any sort in their fingers or hands may want to ask a caretaker to grind their bud.

When it was all said and done, however, my grind looked exquisite. Those yellow trichomes were literally everywhere! This is a great strain if you have a grinder with a kief catcher. And if you don’t yet have a grinder with a kief catcher, get on that!

Smell Before Vaping

Limonene is the dominating scent from the moment you open the glass jar. Those lemon notes sing loudly, like a choir. They are followed quickly by Pinene. The combination renders a scent that’s akin to Pine-Sol, for better or worse.

While this smell took me back to the days of dusting my childhood home with my mother, others may not have fond memories attached to the smell and may find the fresh scent more than a little overwhelming. And make no mistake, this strain is stinky! Well, it’s stinky in a clean way. But it’s definitely not a strain you’ll want around if you need to hide that you are medicating from others.

Negatives aside, I adore the scent of this cannabis. It’s strong, but lovely. I couldn’t help but keep the jar open while I was vaping, just so the smell could waft my way every so often.

The Taste Test

I vaped this Ohio medical marijuana with my usual devices, an Arizer ExtremeQ vaporizer and a Pax portable vaporizer. I recommend starting off with a bag set at a lower temperature, to open the terpenes. After that first bag, work up to a higher temp to vaporize the cannabinoids.

Linalool steps up to the plate as the dominating terpene while vaping. Pinene and Limonene are also present throughout, but this cannabis tastes almost like a spice gum, like Clove or Black Jack. There’s a slight bite to the aftertaste, but that can sometimes happen to me with Limonene terpenes. It dissipates rather quickly.

These flavors continued, shifting in potency, with each bag. I ended up vaping 4 bags of this strain. I eventually paired the final 2 bags of this cannabis with some orange juice, which brought to life the citrus notes. I would also recommend a fruity zinfandel (red or white) or a dessert wine to pair with this cannabis.

Medicinal Benefits and Side Effects I Noted

The medicinal benefits noted below are for educational purposes only, and are not a substitute for the advice of a medical practitioner or licensed budtender.

Like many Calyx Peak products, this is a THCA-heavy strain, packing an impressive 24.08% THCA in the bottle I purchased. If you’d like to learn more about THCA, and the awesome benefits it can provide the body, just click here.

This hybrid strain leans indica, but offers just enough of a sativa-like head rush that you may feel awakened and ready to do some chores around the house. I wanted to exercise. I kept pausing my regular activities to do some push-ups or crunches, or just listen to some music and dance.

All the while, my muscles were getting more relaxed with each bag I vaped. My mind was at ease and I felt a creative rush that made me want to write or paint as well. I had run a 5K the day before. My pain level was higher than normal from that run, around a 5-5.5 out of 10 on the pain index. These levels were reduced to a 2.5-3 for several hours following medicating.

Many of the euphoric or head rush effects wore off quicker than I would have liked, sometimes lasting only a few minutes. However, the relaxation and anti-inflammatory benefits continued for 2-3 hours after my first bag. This makes Whip It an excellent strain after a hard work day. It’ll give you just enough energy to get through the rest of your day, and send you off to bed, ready for a restful night of sleep.

Final Thoughts on Whip It

The one negative is that the song, “Whip It” played on loop as I vaporized this cannabis. But since the band Devo was literally born in Kent, Ohio, and I dearly love the band, I didn’t mind so much. Undoubtedly, the name “Whip It” was a nod to these Akron local legends. But perhaps the point of the Song label is more pointed. These are the songs that will loop as you vape.

But outside of that hilarious problem, this is an excellent Tier I strain. Patients can unwind while gaining just enough energy to finish out those daily chores. It can provide body euphoria and relaxation to muscles, easing tension and reducing inflammation, while jolting the system with a slight burst of energy and creativity.

In lesser words: Whip It good!

Ohio law prohibits patients from buying or using cannabis products intended for smoking medical marijuana yet most of us still prefer it.
