Ohio Medical Marijuana Strain Review:

Looking For A Good Morning Strain?

Review & Photos by: Randy Shaffer
Pure Ohio - Chiesel - Bottle

Packaging: First Impressions

Chiesel by Pure Ohio Wellness comes packed in a black bottle. Design is almost exactly the same as the bottle for Hiker’s Blend, another Pure Ohio Wellness Ohio medical marijuana strain, save for the name change and the surrounding band of color — this time yellow (previously orange for Hiker’s Blend).

While patients cannot see the cannabis they are buying with this packaging, they can at least recycle the bottle after they’ve finished with it. The bottle itself is also quite easy to open. Simply squeeze two corners and the top pops right off. This makes the bottle excellent for patients with pain in their hands or fingers.

Cannabis Look: Out of the Bottle

This strain isn’t much of a stunner up close, mostly due to its slightly faded appearance, muted further by dark leaves. Outside of the distinctive orange pistils, Chiesel almost resembles a hemp strain, with flattened bud colas and a more leafy appearance.

Nugs in my bottle ranged in shape, from quarter-sized colas to pea-sized minis. There was even about a bowl’s worth of shake in my bottle, presumably because this cannabis is so leafy. It leaned a little brittle as well, crumbling in my fingers.

Colors, as noted, are a tad muted, hidden under a fresh layer of trichomes, with pine greens and orange hues being the most notable sparks of color.

How Does It Grind?

This strain ground up pretty easily, likely thanks to the brittle nature of the buds themselves. I took two larger colas, about the size of nickel, and ground them up. In about a dozen turns, I had a wonderful grind, with dry flower ready for vaping.

This giving tree strain gave me about 3.5 bowls from just two nickel-sized nugs. Not too shabby.

Patients with pain in their hands should consider breaking up the bud into smaller pieces before grinding. Doing so will result in an easy grind, and flower perfect for vaporization.

Smell Before Vaping

For a strain that calls itself Chiesel, I was expecting this one to lean in heavily on that cheese aroma that cannabis can sometimes have. But frankly, I found the cheese odor to be more dominant in Purple Bomb by Galenas.

I kept returning to Chiesel over and over, searching for that cheesy aroma. I even closed myself in a room with no light and no ambient odors, just to see if sensory deprivation would increase my detection skills. Alas, I never quite caught a strong sense of that aroma, just subtle notes of it.

Rather, Chisel delivers a fine diesel aroma, with just a hint of cherry and possibly pine, with very subtle cheese notes — so subtle I could just barely capture the essence. Up close, this one almost smells like breakfast sausage, mixing savory, salty aromas with a striking, sweet undercurrents. Not my favorite, but definitely not bad, either.

The Taste Test

I vaped this medical cannabis with an Arizer ExtremeQ vaporizer. I like to start my first bag at a lower temperature to open the terpenes, and work up to a higher temp to vaporize the cannabinoids.

Breakfast Sausage continued to be the most notable way to describe this strain’s unique flavor palette. From the first pull to the final hit in my vape bag, I could taste the savory and sweet aromas of fresh-grilled morning sausage, complemented by a delicate earthy aftertaste. There’s just a hint of pepper, a mild diesel flavor, and a robust through-thread that kept me coming back for more.

While I do tend to prefer a fruitier cannabis, I was rather digging what Chiesel had to offer. Though it wasn’t exactly cheesy, it did give me that Sunday morning brunch vibe, and had me craving some eggs, toast, bacon and sausage.

Medicinal Benefits and Side Effects I Noted

Note: The medicinal benefits noted in this strain profile are for educational purposes only, and are not a substitute for the advice of a medical practitioner or licensed budtender.

Chiesel by Pure Ohio Wellness is a sativa cannabis strain. The bottle I purchased from my Ohio medical marijuana dispensary contained 23.59% THC and 0.10% CBD.

This strain was recommended for its powerful euphoric effects that work to ease anxiety, inspire creativity and soften worn muscles and joints.

The headband effect was subtle with this one. Rather, I felt a more whole body effect, right down to my fingers and toes. Each radiated and pulsed, providing a soothing massage on the senses.

After my first bag, I felt awake and alert. I wanted to exercise and dance. I felt a sense of joy and exuberance — which was welcome considering the dull, cloudy Ohio setting. Such conditions can easily control the mood during the fall and winter months. But Chiesel is like a burst of sunshine, crashing through the clouds.

Alas, while Chiesel did wonders for the mind, it didn’t work as well for my aches and pains. I found myself turning to Inception later in the day for more pointed pain relief.

With a flavor reminiscent of a sweet and savory breakfast, Pure Ohio’s Chiesel is a great sativa strain for early mornings. Like a shot of espresso, it will get you going and keep you moving.

Please be aware: Percentages of THC, CBD and terpene profiles can vary greatly between cannabis harvests. This means that some strains profiled at 420oh.io will contain higher, exact or lower percentages of active chemical compounds when purchased at Ohio medical marijuana dispensaries during different harvest seasons.

I was shocked by how much flavor was packed into just one drag!

Method of cultivation is greener, using far less water and energy than traditional grows. The facility even utilizes a proprietary LED light setup that uses less energy and speeds up his harvest time.

A rich palette of stark colors and dazzling complexity. Trichomes like chilly frost in the morning, binding to the leaves in perfect symbiosis.

  2. […] Pure Ohio Wellness out of Springfield, Ohio. Pure Ohio has dramatically changed their bottles since my last profile of their cannabis, switching from a black bottle to a clear bottle. This recyclable container in a major improvement. […]

Disappointed in this strain. Yes it is good medical marijuana, but not excellent which I expect when I’m paying Ohio prices. Not worth the $50 for a 1/10th I paid at “Have a Heart” Honestly this is most disappointed I’ve been in a strain for what I expected. I love the strain “Cheese” and didn’t experience any of the flavor. This reminded me of lower grade stuff I would buy at Ohio University. Very upsetting.
