Time to Take a Koffee Break?

Packaging: First Impressions

This bulk container from Buckeye Relief in Eastlake, Ohio was previously discussed in our review of Grapefruit Sour Dream. It houses 14.15 grams of Ohio medical cannabis. The large black container is certainly nothing extraordinary to look at in terms of design, but it is functional, easy to open and recyclable.

I do wish there was a twist-on lid, though. The way this container seals is a bit difficult, and could result in spilled cannabis if the lid is not properly sealed. As usual with containers like these, patients cannot see the cannabis they are buying — not a dealbreaker, but something worth noting for those who appreciate seeing their cannabis before investing.

Cannabis Look: Out of the Bottle

These nugs are so round, they’re almost like marbles! In fact, they’re about the same size and shape as a marble, with medium density. The nugs were also a little brittle, crumbling under the pressure of my fingertips.

Colors lean dark, with rich military greens and shimmering oranges that remind me of the proton blasts used to capture ghosts in Ghostbusters. There’s also just a hint of purple hiding beneath the surface of this each nug. And each bud is coated with fine haze of white trichomes.

I really enjoyed rolling these nugs around in the palm of my hand, enjoying their beautiful symmetry and simplicity, and, sparks of rich, deep color.

Koffee Cake IX - Grind

How Does It Grind?

I highly recommend breaking these marble-sized nugs up a little bit. They are fairly brittle, and should break with little trouble. About 2-3 of these nugs should yield about 2-2.5 bowls. Considering their density and overall feel, I was surprised I didn’t get more from this strain.

Regardless, the nugs ground down to a fine powder for vaping in about 8-12 turns. This one releases a lot of trichomes when ground, so be sure to use a multi-layer grinder to catch the falling kief. And be sure not to grind this one too much. Check it after a few turns. This strain can turn to a less-than-desirable powder with too many twists.

Smell Before Vaping

I was really digging the aroma of Koffee Cake IX, which leans on a potent diesel scent, with subtle cherry and pine accents. The aroma is much like fresh-brewed coffee in the morning — strong, and ready to awaken your senses with just one sniff.

This is one of those strains where I couldn’t resist leaving the container open, just so I could catch a few extras whiffs of this strain’s potent concoction. The mixture of strong fumes with sweet, cheery undercurrents relaxes the mind, complemented perfectly by a smooth pine finish.

The Taste Test

I vaped this medical cannabis with an Arizer ExtremeQ vaporizer. I like to start my first bag at a lower temperature to open the terpenes, and work up to a higher temp to vaporize the cannabinoids.

Koffee Cake IX lives up to its illustrious name, but this one leans more coffee than cake. In fact, it tastes a lot like a cup of fresh, black coffee. Diesel hits you first with a strong, tasty bite of fumes, followed by a burst of pine. This is topped off by a delicate finish that reminded me of cherry syrup —  likely where the strain gets its sweetness. This sweet flavor actually increased the longer I vaped.

The combination is delightful, though a bit strong at first, leaving a lasting diesel aftertaste. For those sensitive to diesel strains, this one may be a bit too fumy for your liking. That said, this strain provides a robust flavor that’s both memorable and complex.

This strain would pair very well with a sweet red wine or even a barrel-aged whiskey — something to draw out the cherry or pine accents. A glass of cherry juice or a berry tea would also be excellent with Koffee Cake. Or you could just brew up a cup of Joe as well!

Medicinal Benefits and Side Effects I Noted

Note: The medicinal benefits noted in this strain profile are for educational purposes only, and are not a substitute for the advice of a medical practitioner or licensed budtender.

Koffee Cake IX by Buckeye Relief is an indica strain. The 14.15 gram bulk container that I purchased contained cannabis with 26% THC and 0.01% CBD.

This strain was recommended by my budtender for inflammation relief, as well as help with sleep and anxiety.

Koffee Cake IX didn’t quite help with sleep. Rather, I felt that it sparked one last round of energy inside me — enough to get through the day’s tasks, which was great. The strain also provided a gentle relaxation that lasted through the night. But when I went to sleep, I still felt the buzzing of that energy.

Anxieties did feel tempered somewhat, but the effect did not last quite as long as I would have liked. That being said, I was under a lot of stress when I medicated with this strain.

I also reported mild inflammation relief with Koffee Cake, though the effects were not as strong as another Buckeye Relief strain, Inception. If you’re looking for something with mild euphoria and gentle relief, Koffee Cake IX should do the trick.

It’s worth noting that each person is different, so please let us know if this strain worked well for your PTSD, sleep or inflammation.

Please be aware: Percentages of THC, CBD and terpene profiles can vary greatly between cannabis harvests. This means that some strains profiled at 420oh.io will contain higher, exact or lower percentages of active chemical compounds when purchased at Ohio medical marijuana dispensaries during different harvest seasons.

Method of cultivation is greener, using far less water and energy than traditional grows. The facility even utilizes a proprietary LED light setup that uses less energy and speeds up his harvest time.

These syringes are more economical than disposable vape pens, slightly better for the environment.

A real stunner up close, with a rich array of colors, from bright amber hues to inky pine greens. Each cola lives up to its name, accented by an explosion of deep, rich purples.
