Packaging: First Impressions

Layer Cake is cultivated by Grow Ohio, out of Zanesville. This cannabis is sold under the label, Butterfly Effect. I purchased Layer Cake in a bulk 14.15g container. This tin container is pretty simplistic, with strain details on the bottom of the bottle, and not much finesse in terms of design.

The cannabis itself is vacuum-sealed, with a pop-off lid that’s fairly easy to open — simply align the two arrows and pull up. I did note that the lid got looser and harder to open the longer I had this container. The bottle is not see-though, but the pop-up lid and clear vacuum-seal make it so patients can see the cannabis they are buying. Unfortunately, it is unclear if this bottle is recyclable.

Cannabis Look: Out of the Bottle

Layer Cake has a distinctive sativa look to it, with thin, long buds, each about the size of a two quarters.  My bottle also had a few mini nugs and a few larger colas as well.

Color is somewhat restrained or muted, with notes of purple around the stems, pine and military green leaves, and splashes of amber throughout. Trichomes coat these nugs rather thoroughly, dusting the surface with a sandy white.

How Does It Grind?

Bud colas here grind down rather easily. 4-5 colas should give you about 3-4 bowls for vaping. The buds are medium-density and a little sticky to the touch, but not so much that your fingers will be tacky after grinding.

Buds grind to a great consistency for vaping in only a few turns. Be sure to use a kief catcher for this one as it will throw off A LOT of kief when ground down.

Smell Before Vaping

Layer Cake has a fresh scent to it, like taking a stroll through the woods after a rain shower. There is also a strong cheesy aroma, like feta or blue cheese. I wasn’t in love with the aroma of this one as I’m not always the biggest fan of cheesy cannabis, but I was impressed with how strongly this strain hit the nostrils. Expect your room to fill up with this strain’s unique aroma.

The Taste Test

I vaped this medical cannabis with an Arizer ExtremeQ vaporizer. I like to start my first bag at a lower temperature to open the terpenes, and work up to a higher temp to vaporize the cannabinoids.

Layer Cake has a fresh, clean taste to it at first, almost like a swimming pool, or even fresh cut broccoli. This flavor eventually subsides, leaning more on diesel fumes. The cheesy notes from the aroma are packed in here as well, though far more subtle when vaped.

The aftertaste reminded me of buttery popcorn, with a salty rush of flavors and a mild corn taste. The longer I vaped, the more this strain revealed tasty floral notes, like a lavender perfume.

I was surprised, however, that I didn’t really detect much lemon in this strain, despite the limonene terpene leading this strain’s flavor profile. Overall, this strain tastes … interesting, though it wasn’t my favorite. Layer Cake leans more diesel, which all but eliminates any sweetness. That said, this strain may entice those looking for a flower with robust flavor.

Medicinal Benefits and Side Effects I Noted

Note: The medicinal benefits noted in this strain profile are for educational purposes only, and are not a substitute for the advice of a medical practitioner or licensed budtender.

Layer Cake by Butterfly Effect is a 50/50 india/sativa hybrid flower. The 14.55g bottle I purchased contained cannabis with 29% THC and 0.09% CBD.

My medical marijuana patient consultant suggested I give this strain a try for pain and anxiety relief, as well as mild euphoria and relative effects.

Relaxation is right! I found myself a little couch-locked by this strain, but that wasn’t a bad thing. Rather, this strain injected enough euphoria to ease tension and erase any serious worries from the day.

The hybrid effects go to work within only a few hits, easing pain and inflammation on my joints and spine. The effects were not so powerful that I didn’t still reach for a bottle of Advil to ease my back pain, but it helped keep me relaxed and without pain for the rest of the evening.

Speaking of which, this strain would be excellent before bed as it helps calm the mind and warm the body. I was shocked by just how well this strain worked for rest and sleep, even without using my usual high THC tincture.

Final Thoughts on Layer Cake

Lake Cake by Butterfly Effect is a strongly scented strain that leans hard on cheese and diesel notes. It also provides a great sense of relaxation and mental relief. If you’re seeking a balanced hybrid, with a great mixture of indica and sativa effects, check out this strain while it is still on dispensary shelves.

Please be aware: Percentages of THC, CBD and terpene profiles can vary greatly between cannabis harvests. This means that some strains profiled at 420oh.io will contain higher, exact or lower percentages of active chemical compounds when purchased at Ohio medical marijuana dispensaries during different harvest seasons.

Over the next three editorials, we’ll be taking a look at the top eight democratic presidential candidates, as well as current Republican President Donald Trump, and where they stand on legalizing cannabis.

Impressive mixture of amber pistils and creamy trichomes. The pine green leaves are absolutely covered here, barely visible beneath the dreamy sea of pearly white.

Clevelanders can now get caught with just under half a pound of cannabis (200 grams) and only receive a citation for the offense. This means no jail time, no arrest, and no fine.
