Who Supports Cannabis: Part Two

Ohio Democratic Presidential Primaries

Are Your Favorite Democratic Candidates Are Pro-Weed?

Article by: Randy Shaffer

Election season is just starting to kick into high gear, with Super Tuesday coming pretty quickly, on March 3rd! The 2020 Ohio Democratic Primary is March 17th. That’s only a few weeks away now.

Over the next three editorials, we’ll be taking a look at the top eight democratic presidential candidates, as well as current Republican President Donald Trump, and where they stand on legalizing cannabis.

Some candidates have radical plans to legalize weed, while others are less than enthusiastic about cannabis, or can’t seem to make up their mind. Read on to discover who aligns with your views. And don’t forget to vote on March 17th!

Be sure to check out the first part here.

Elizabeth Warren

Stance: For Legalization

Elizabeth Warren has been a vocal proponent of cannabis legalization for some time, though she has been soft with support in the Senate. She recently upped her ante, though, with a campaign promise to legalize cannabis thorough executive order

This is essentially the same plan as Bernie Sanders without a day one promise. And though it makes things easier in states where cannabis is already legal, it may not offer much state protection in states without cannabis laws, be it medicinal or recreational.

This method of legalization will, at least, offer tax and banking options for budding businesses, and it would mean no federal offense if you’re caught with cannabis in a state that does not offer recreational marijuana. But will she actually sign the executive order? That remains to be seen.

Tom Steyer

Tom Steyer

Stance: Iffy on Legalization

Tom Steyer is one of a few big billionaires running for president .. because apparently having heaping gobs of money wasn’t enough for these greedy wannabe politicians. Mr. Steyer has never held public office, so we’ll have to take him for his word that he’s pro-cannabis

Recently, Steyer’s team had this to say about the issue, “Tom believes we must end the failed War on Drugs. Incarceration is not the answer to addiction, and low-level drug offenses should not carry a severe sentence. Tom will legalize marijuana, let states pass their own policies, expunge past records, and direct the federal government to open banking services to the marijuana industry.”

Nice words, but it’s hard to say what Steyer would or would not support. He’s spoken positively about cannabis, but without any legislation, or any serious plan on his website, it’s tough to tell if he’s going to move the needle forward, toward legalization, or just keep things as they are.

Andrew Yang

Stance: Pro-Legalization...But Out Of The Race

Sorry, Yang Gang. When I started this series, I didn’t expect to see Andrew Yang drop out one day after publishing the first chapter. Alas, here we are. Yang was not only for the legalization of cannabis, he was also a proponent of mushroom legalization.

Yang remains on this list because he could prove to be an effective, enticing Vice President pick for Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders or even the more moderate Amy Klobacher. And his youthful energy, universal basic income plan, and pro-cannabis stance will go along well with many of the current crop of candidates.

Yang did not expressly state how he would legalize cannabis, but his focus would have been to remove federal restrictions and pardon non-violent criminal offenses. It’s a good set of goals that would compliment several tickets quite nicely.

Next week, we’ll look at Joe Biden and Amy Klobuchar, and we’ll also take a look at Donald Trump’s “stance” on cannabis to finish this series off. You won’t want to miss it!

Impressive mixture of amber pistils and creamy trichomes. The pine green leaves are absolutely covered here, barely visible beneath the dreamy sea of pearly white.

Clevelanders can now get caught with just under half a pound of cannabis (200 grams) and only receive a citation for the offense. This means no jail time, no arrest, and no fine.
