Packaging: First Impressions

GMO (I), otherwise or sometimes known as Garlic Cookies, is cultivated by Wellspring Fields out of Ravenna, Ohio. Wellspring finally mixes things up with this new clear recyclable bottle, which allows patients to be able to see the cannabis they are buying. Design and details remain the same as previous containers, but the clear bottle is a welcome change.

Alas, while I think this was an isolated issue, I did have serious trouble opening my bottle. It would seem the lid was either too small, or was jammed on too tight. Either way, I eventually had to use a screwdriver to pry off the lid, and ended up placing the cannabis in a jar after. I can only imagine how someone older would have struggled to get this bottle open!

Cannabis Look: Out of the Bottle

The 5.66 gram bottle of GMO that I purchased contained a decent assortment of nugs, ranging from small popcorn minis to larger silver dollar-sized nugs. The cannabis itself was very sticky, with a seriously thick layer of beautifully formed trichomes. So many, in fact, they were breaking off onto my fingers as I photographed them.

Up close, the most striking feature beyond the trichomes are the sharp splashes of purple found on the underside of many buds. The topside of the leaves feature rich pines and an almost highlighter green around the edges of each leaf.

The buds also sport very thick calyx structures, rendering a dense flower. When ground, this strain can powderize rather quickly due to the brittleness of the buds. Be sure to add a humidity pack to your bottle to soften up this strain if you’re getting powdery grinds.

Smell Before Vaping

GMO stands for garlic, mushrooms and onions, and it’s named this for good reason. This strain smells exactly like those foods, with strong currents of garlic and onion erupting the second you open the bottle, gaining potency after grinding.

There’s also an earthy mushroom vibe that can quickly fill a room once this strain is ground, so be warned. If you’re not a fan of strong smelling strains, you may want to avoid this one. But for those seeking a strong, potent strain, you can’t get much stronger than GMO.

The Taste Test

I vaped this medical cannabis with an Arizer ExtremeQ vaporizer. I like to start my first bag at a lower temperature to open the terpenes, and work up to a higher temp to vaporize the cannabinoids.

As expected, this strain tastes very similar to how it smells, with a smooth garlicky through-thread accented by a mild onion taste. There’s also slight mushroom notes found in the aftertaste. This flavor takes on a more earthy bite the longer you vape this strain.

By the end of my vaping experience, the garlic flavor of GMO was all but gone, which was somewhat disappointing. With such a potent aroma, I expected the flavor of this strain to last a little longer. But by my third vape bag, the garlic overtones had become faint undertones. That’s not to say I was disappointed by what this strain had to offer, but I was surprised by the subtlety of the flavor.

Medicinal Benefits and Side Effects I Noted

Note: The medicinal benefits noted in this strain profile are for educational purposes only, and are not a substitute for the advice of a medical practitioner or licensed budtender.

GMO (I), also known as Garlic Cookies or Garlic, Mushrooms and Onions, is an indica strain with a high THC percentage, coming in at 34.3% THC and 0.0% CBD (in my bottle). The strain is a cross of Girl Scout Cookies and Chemdawg.

This bud was recommended for its high THC percentage, which yields a potent sense of calming euphoria. The strain is also recommended for mild anti-inflammation relief as well.

I really wish I had some of Riviera Creek’s Garlic Cookies on-hand for a proper comparison, but these strains appear to be very similar, though I recall RC’s Garlic Cookies being just a tad less flavorful.

Wellspring’s offering delivers the same intoxicating euphoria, which leads to a nice sense of happiness and calm, following by a surprising amount of energy. I felt my senses engage quite quickly, which helped me clean the house, and deal with a month’s long quarantine.

Pain and inflammation was also eased, though not as strongly as a strain like 10th Planet. Still, for those seeking a good dose of energizing euphoria, with a dash of inflammation relief, this strain should do the trick.

Final Thoughts on GMO

GMO by Wellspring Fields is a potent strain with an intense aroma, and loads of beautiful trichomes. It’s also one of the highest THC flowers available on the Ohio medical marijuana market. If you’re in the mood for a garlicky indica, GMO should hit the spot.

Please be aware: Percentages of THC, CBD and terpene profiles can vary greatly between cannabis harvests. This means that some strains profiled at 420oh.io will contain higher, exact or lower percentages of active chemical compounds when purchased at Ohio medical marijuana dispensaries during different harvest seasons.
