Ohio Medical Marijuana Strain Review:
Island Girl by Buckeye Relief
Travel to Faraway Lands With This Strain!
Review & Photos by: Randy Shaffer
Packaging: First Impressions
Island Girl is a sativa strain, a cross of Island Skunk and Platinum Cookies. This strain is cultivated by Buckeye Relief out of Eastlake, Ohio. I purchased a 14.15 gram bulk container of this cannabis. The white plastic bottle is certainly passable, but doesn’t have the best lid for keeping the cannabis properly cured. As such, your flower may dry out as this container empties.
The pinch-off top doesn’t always seal well, either, which can be problematic. I’m not sure how long these containers will stay on the market. I’ve seen a few other containers from Buckeye Relief that work a little better. Let’s hope these containers slowly get phased out. But until that time comes, be sure to add a humidity pack into your container to keep your cannabis just right.
Cannabis Look: Out of the Bottle
My 14.15 gram container was replete with popcorn nugs and minis, which was a little disappointing. These were a few stunners in the container, but not as many as I was hoping for. The largest nug was about the size of a quarter. The average size was closer to a dime.
Up close, this strain features a thick layer of white trichomes, accented by fiery sparks of burnt orange pistils. Greens are rather muted, with only the occasional pine popping through.
This strain grinds remarkably well, acting as a kind of giving tree. I was legit surprised by how much ground flower would come from just a small handful of nugs.
Smell Before Vaping
Island Girl lives up to the name, with a sweet, earthy aroma, a citrus through-thread, and a hops-like finish. This strain gave me a chill summer vibe, like taking a vacation stroll along a beach, with a nice cold beer in my hand. There’s also a hint of lemon or grapefruit that activates once this flower is ground up, as well as subtle notes of pine.
The Taste Test
I vaped this medical cannabis with an Arizer ExtremeQ vaporizer. I like to start my first bag at a lower temperature to open the terpenes, and work up to a higher temp to vaporize the cannabinoids.
Once vaped, this strain leans a little more on the earthy side of things, with a robust flavor that reminded me of raw chocolate powder. This is followed by a lovely lemon zest, and a subtle grapefruit bite. Be warned, the bite may yield a few coughs. This strain finishes with a gassy hops-like flavor that leaves a mild green aftertaste. Alas, while I rather loved the aroma of this strain, I found it to be a bit more earthy than I would have preferred. That said, this strain’s grapefruit notes as quite fantastic.
Medicinal Benefits and Side Effects I Noted

Island Girl is a sativa strain cultivated by Buckeye Relief. The bottle I purchased contained cannabis with 24.9% THC and 0.09% CBD.
This strain was recommended for its strong euphoria, stress relief, creativity, added focus and energy, as well as mild pain and inflammation relief.
Island Girl goes to work right away, with a smooth headband effect that slowly gains momentum before settling into a potent sense of euphoria.
I felt mild pain relief, but not so much that I didn’t reach for some advil after a long hike. Inflammation remained about the same as before I started vaping with this strain.
That said, I was pleasantly surprised by how much energy I had when vaping with this strain. I felt more focused and alert, and my brain felt engaged, less stressed and more activated. I wanted to work on creative projects, as well as simple chores like yard work around my house.
Though not recommended before bed, this strain would be great for those looking for a midday pick-me-up, or an early morning strain to get your day started. Like a shot of espresso, this strain delivers energy in spades.
Final Thoughts on Island Girl
Island Girl is a wonderfully energetic sativa that is sure to get your mind and body moving. And with a smooth earthy tropical island aroma, this strain is a great option for those looking to escape unwanted stress and activate some creative juices.
