Ohio Medical Marijuana Strain Review:
Cali Dragon by
Firelands Scientific
Can You Tame The Dragon?
Review & Photos by: Randy Shaffer
Packaging: First Impressions
Cali Dragon is cultivated by Firelands Scientific out of Huron, Ohio. Firelands has largely stayed with the same general design as they had when Ohio’s medical marijuana program originally launched (one of my first purchases was from F/S).
Fireland’s containers used to be a little larger for the 2.83 gram allotment, so it’s nice to see they are using a container that’s a little smaller. And while I like the design, as well as the feel of this sturdy recyclable white plastic bottle, it is disappointing that patients can’t see the cannabis inside. Using a clear seal would offer patients the option to look at what they are purchasing. Alas, the seal is made of a common white foam-type material.
Cannabis Look: Out of the Bottle
The bottle of Cali Dragon I purchased contained some decent sized nugs. They were a little brittle to the touch, so I’d suggest using a Boveda 62% humidity pack to soften the nugs up.
This is a striking strain up close, with a wide range of greens shining through thick glass-like trichomes, with sparks of orange, mustard yellow and harvest red throughout. The pistils are particularly unique with this one. I admired the beauty and chaos of their formation. They were either very stubby and coiled, or reaching out wildly, like tiny insect legs or tentacles.
How Does It Grind?
Bud colas in my bottle of Cali Dragon were pretty dense, but ground down fairly easily due to dryness. Again, I’d recommend a Boveda humidity pack to fix that issue if it becomes bothersome. About 3 nugs resulted in roughly 3 bowls of dry flower for vaping.
Smell Before Vaping
The aroma of Cali Dragon has a nice earthy vibe, with subtle pine notes and a heavy musk that will fill a room in mere seconds, so be warned. There’s also a hint of lemon that brings out the woody notes, like cedar. Just smelling this one had me yearning to go on a long hike through the trees.
The Taste Test
I vaped this medical cannabis with an Arizer ExtremeQ vaporizer. I like to start my first bag at a lower temperature to open the terpenes, and work up to a higher temp to vaporize the cannabinoids.
The earthy aroma of Cali Dragon breathes a fiery cloud of tasty, dank cannabis. The terpene profile really activates on the palette, delivering a strong woody flavor, with a lemony zest aftertaste. The first few hits were strong with flavor, which may not suit those who enjoy a sweeter tasting strain. But this is an excellent tasting bud, with a nice hippie vibe.
Note, this one didn’t really taste great with foods, but it does pair very well with herbal teas, woody wines or barrel-aged alcohol.
Medicinal Benefits and Side Effects I Noted
Note: The medicinal benefits noted in this strain profile are for educational purposes only, and are not a substitute for the advice of a medical practitioner or licensed budtender.
Cali Dragon by Firelands Scientific is an indica-dominant hybrid strain, a cross of LA OG, Trainwreck and Recon OG4. The bottle I purchased contained cannabis with 25.17% THC and 0.10% CBD.
This strain was recommended for its potent euphoric effects, relaxation, depression relief and de-stressing, as well as having anti-inflammatory properties.
And this strain does live up to that hype, with intoxicating euphoria that quickly delivers a strong headband effect around the temples.
This euphoric effect eased tension in my neck and shoulders, and helped me relax almost instantly. Pain in my stomach and joints greatly reduced for the duration of my experience as well.
Even better, I felt a powerful spark of creative energy that rejuvenated my senses and had me geared up to both exercise and work on writing projects.
I just love a strain that can deliver equal and ample doses of energy and relaxation, and Cali Dragon does exactly that.
Final Thoughts on Cali Dragon
Cali Dragon is both calming and rejuvenating, with a heady euphoria that comes on strong, but slowly soothes stress, pain and depression. It’s also got a great earthy aroma, and a powerful cedar flavor. This one will no doubt please those seeking a potent indica hybrid.
Please be aware: Percentages of THC, CBD and terpene profiles can vary greatly between cannabis harvests. This means that some strains profiled at 420oh.io will contain higher, exact or lower percentages of active chemical compounds when purchased at Ohio medical marijuana dispensaries during different harvest seasons.
