Ohio Medical Marijuana Strain Review:
Triple Chocolate Chip by
Butterfly Effect
Triple the Relaxation?
Review & Photos by: Randy Shaffer
Packaging: First Impressions
I purchased a 14.15 gram bulk container of Triple Chocolate Chip. This strain comes from Butterfly Effect (aka Grow Ohio), located out of Zanesville, Ohio. If you’ve read my review of Layer Cake, you know what to expect from this container. The tin features a pop-off top, with a clear seal beneath, so patients can see the cannabis they are buying. The container is certainly simplistic, but fairly easy to open. Sadly, it’s unclear if the bottle can be recycled.
Cannabis Look: Out of the Bottle
Triple Chocolate Chip has an elegant appearance on the surface, with crisp, white trichomes that accent the darker pine green hues on the leaves. There’s even a small hint of purple at the base of each stem.
Amber pistils stand out on each nug, providing a tantalizing spark of color that brings out the white in the trichomes, and the dark colors hiding within the leaves.
How Does It Grind?
Bud colas in my bottle of Triple Chocolate Chip were perfectly cured, with medium density. About five dime-sized nugs translated to about 3-4 bowls of dry flower.
This strain grinds pretty easily, ready to be vaped in only a half dozen turns. This strain isn’t too sticky, or too stemmy, so patients with pain in their hands or fingers should not have any trouble grinding this one.
Smell Before Vaping
Sorry to let you all down, but Triple Chocolate Chip isn’t going to smell (or taste) exactly like chocolate, and that’s OK. It does have subtle notes of chocolate, but up close this strain almost has a woody aroma to it, like a fireplace burning cedar chips. There’s a subtle sweetness to the strain, a hint of pine and a slight zing of mint that delivers a fantastic combo of aromas. Like many strains on the market, I wish this scent could be bottled and sold all on its own.
The Taste Test
I vaped this medical cannabis with an Arizer ExtremeQ vaporizer. I like to start my first bag at a lower temperature to open the terpenes, and work up to a higher temp to vaporize the cannabinoids.
Triple Chocolate Chip is a cross of Triple OG and Mint Chocolate Chip. My container definitely leaned on the mint side of things a little more than chocolate when vaped, though there is a very subtle chocolaty flavor to be found. But this strain primarily tastes like wintergreen gum, with a strong mint through-thread complimented by a sugary sweetness and woody notes that again reminded me of oak or cedar. In fact, this strain would likely pair very well with a bourbon or barrel-aged whiskey.
Medicinal Benefits and Side Effects I Noted
Note: The medicinal benefits noted in this strain profile are for educational purposes only, and are not a substitute for the advice of a medical practitioner or licensed budtender.
Triple Chocolate Chip by Butterfly Effect is an indica-leaning hybrid strain, a cross of Mint Chocolate Chip and Triple OG. The bottle I purchased contained cannabis with 24.1% THC and 0% CBD.
My licensed budtender suggested I give this strain a try for late evening relaxation, de-stressing and mild inflammation relief.
Admittedly, I didn’t feel a lot from this strain after my first vape bag. But by the middle of the second bag, I could feel a calming wave of euphoria settling over my mind, easing back stress and replacing it with layers of humor, joy and creativity.
Sleep was equally excellent. I managed to stay asleep almost all night (a rarity for me), and found myself rested and alert the next day. In fact, I actually pulled back on using my high THC tincture and simply vaped this strain before bed as a substitute.
While I didn’t feel many physical effects of this strain, the intoxicating euphoria did an excellent job relaxing my body, firmly locking it to my bed or couch.
Final Thoughts on Triple Chocolate
This indica-leaning hybrid strain from Butterfly Effect is great for unraveling stress after a busy day. It’s got a soothing cedar aroma, a minty flavor, and packs plenty of relaxation. If you’re looking for a hybrid to use in the late evenings, Triple Chocolate Chip should get a test run.
